Canning Street School

The popular open-plan design has been retained to encourage interaction between pupils of different age groups and cultural backgrounds. But the old ridgelight created problems of glare and overheating as well asinferior thermal and acoustic insulation, so, during the contract, it was decided to replace it.

Xtralite was selected as the rooflight manufacturer and developed a detailed design using Nanogel® technology to satisfy thermal, acoustic and fire requirements.

Project architect Sasha Pisarevic from Parsons Brinckerhoff’s Newcastle upon Tyne office said:

‘The new ridgelight has transformed the central open area with a greatly improved quality of diffused light without glare and the Nanogel glazing also helps prevent overheating in summer—supporting the new ventilation system.’
